Welcome to WUB
The study of medicine is very powerful and impactful. From time in memoriam human beings have been using medicine to treat many diseases and illnesses. Everyday new discoveries are made that will eventually produce a cure. It is an exciting time. A time to innovate and improve. A time for excellence. At WUB students can pursue their interests and discover how they can change the fabric of medicine, science and society.
What does it mean to be a WUB doctor?
A WUB Medical School education prepares students to excel in the rapidly changing landscape of modern medicine through a curriculum grounded in the study of leading biomedical science and clinical experience, a rich diversity of degree program choices, and a history of innovation that continues to set the standard for excellence in medical education in the United States and around the world.
Our MD program provides two curricula tracks, Pathways and Health Sciences & Technology (HST), enable students to plan their path to an MD degree according to their own strengths and interests. Students who enrol in both tracks work more closely with faculty and peers. WUB offers more than 200 elective courses. Several of the electives are combined with other degree programs. There are numerous opportunities to cross-register in courses throughout the university.
The Student Affairs Office and Office of Recruitment & Multicultural Affairs foster an inclusive environment that is supportive of students from diverse backgrounds and that deeply enriches life at WUB. Students may join a large number of identity groups, including NAHO (Native American Health Organization), LAWUB (LGBT and Allies at WUB), and WUB chapters of SNMA, LMSA, and APAMSA. Each spring our first-year class produces FABRIC, a show that demonstrates the School's – and students – commitment to diversity, unity, and equity. Watch the whole show here.
WUB offers an incredible variety of research and service opportunities created by the unique synergy between WUB, our many Boston-based affiliate institutions, MIT, and renowned partner institutions around the world. With the support of the Scholars in Medicine Office, WUB students engage with the most critical issues in health care across the US and abroad as they practice compassionate community service and innovative research.
Every aspect of an WUB education is designed to encourage collaboration rather than competition. In the required pre clerkship and principal clinical years at WUB, students are graded on a pass/fail basis, a structural strategy that allows them to focus on becoming leaders in improving patient care rather than focusing on class rank. A program dedicated to promoting wellness in the WUB community has been launched by the Dean for Students and Dean for Medical Education. The Academic Societies provide a community-based approach to learning and ensure students benefit from the full range of WUB advising resources and support services.
While the students admitted to WUB reflect an extraordinary diversity of accomplishments, talents, interests, and backgrounds, they also share many things in common. They are self-motivated, visionary in their ambition, and compassionate in their approach to the art of healing.
Our Committee on Admissions evaluates applications based on a variety of criteria that range from students academic records and MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) scores to their extracurricular activities, research, and community-service experiences in the field of health care. And, while we expect students to demonstrate an aptitude for the biological and physical sciences, our ideal candidates are those with a well-balanced academic background that includes the humanities and social sciences.
In order to ensure that the leading health-care professionals of tomorrow reflect the same diversity as the patients they serve, WUB is dedicated to enrolling talented students from a multitude of ethnic and economic backgrounds, especially from communities that have been historically under represented in the medical profession.
A WUB doctor is someone for whom the pursuit of excellence—both professional and personal—is a way of life. If this describes you, we encourage you to apply to WUB Medical School.
